  • Contrast and Analysis of Isolated and Non-isolated Power Supply
    Isolated power supply An isolated power supply uses magnetic components such as transformer to electrical connect the input power and output power, which are independent from each other even there is output short-circuit. The output voltage can be adjusted through the transformer. Non isolated power supply A non-isolated power supply uses no transformer to directly connect the input terminal and output terminal. Voltage reduction is done through BUCK circuit to set down the voltage and make a constant-current control. So that the most distinct advantages of non-isolated power supply are low cost, simplistic and high performance. However, there is electric shock hazard if touch it when the light is full loaded, and so lead to safety risk.   Contrast of isolated and non-isolated driver Theoretically speaking, in the electronic circuit, the less electronic components, the more reliable it is. But why is non-isolated power supply is less reliable than the isolated power supply? The reason is that non-isolated circuit is very sensitive but poorly restraining to power surge. As for isolated power supply, power is input into transformer first and to LED load next. But part of the input power is loaded into the LED in the non-isolated circuit. So that isolated circuit can well restrain to power surge and less damage than that in the non-isolated circuit. And this is why most people require isolated power supply in the market. Non-isolated driver are more effective than isolated ones, and also with lower cost. Isolated driver are always difficult in making high efficiency and cannot do well with the high temperature, and is with a high cost. Power surge damage to LED drivers Damage in non-isolated driver is resulted from the power surge of the AC power, a high voltage but strong power even up to 3000V in a short time, which may occur under thunder and lighting, will go straight to the output terminal in the BUCK circuit and damage the constant current detector ring, even damage the LED chip, therefore make a 300V shoot-through and burn down the light fitting. 80% of LED drivers are broken down in using, and other mini-size switching power as well. All of them are damaged by the power surge. LED driver is broken because LED is very sensitive to such power surge because of its loading character. However, power surge problem not only occurs in non-isolated drivers, but also the isolated driver as well. There are many isolated drivers, such as the outdoor street lamp power supply, will be broken down in a short time of using because of the power surge. As the developing of new technology, non-isolated power supply is mature and stable. If the structure is well designed, it can be a safe power supply as isolated ones. Different application on isolated and non-isolated driver Here comes some reference in using LED driver, it is concluded by years of experience. For the high power LED driver, isolated driver is safer, a non-isolated driver may risk overweight concern. For the low power LED driver, it should be decided according to particular case. To use non-isolated driver, two points should be concerned: a) cost permitted, b) heat available. Suitable application places for non-isolated driver: a) indoor lighting, stable power supply and less influence by power surge. b) High voltage and small current, efficiency and cost cannot benefit from non-isolated driver in the low voltage and high current. c) Stable voltage.     One Percent’s Non-isolated Power Supply One Percent has been focus on non-isolated driver, and lots of experiment and testes are made to check the availability of such non-isolated driver with our LED downlights. As the following chart of data shows, with the same downlight and LED chip, non-isolated driver is at least 5% more efficient than the isolated one.   • LED Commercial Lightings Basics —— Definition of Lighting
    1. lumen:   Lumen is the basic unit of luminous flux, representing the total amount of visible light emitted by a light source per unit of time. The higher the lumen value, the higher the brightness of the lamp.   People often “lumens” and “wattage” in the concept of confusion, but lumens are used to measure the brightness of lamps and lanterns. In contrast, wattage is used to describe the size of the lamps and lanterns of the power, lumens and watts in the lamps and lanterns, respectively, represent a different physical quantity and characteristics, in the selection of lamps, and lanterns Lumen and wattage represent different physical quantities and characteristics in the lamps, when choosing lamps, you need to consider both lumen and wattage according to the actual needs and uses.   2. Color temperature (CCT):   Color temperature is a physical quantity used to define the color of the light source in lighting optics, and is also the most common indicator of the spectral quality of the light source. Color temperature is generally expressed in CCT, the unit is K (Kevin).     Color temperature value is through a standard black body (such as iron) heating, the temperature rises to a certain degree when the color begins by: red -> light red -> orange -> white -> blue white -> blue, gradually changing, using this light color change characteristics, the light color of a light source and the black body at a certain temperature presents the same time the color of the light, we will be black body at that time the absolute warmth of the color temperature known as the light source. Due to the difference in color temperature, it can be divided into warm light, warm white light, and cool light.       -Warm light    The color temperature of warm light is below 3300K. Warm light is similar to incandescent light, with more red light components, which can give people a warm, healthy, and comfortable feeling. It is suitable for an entrance hall, bedroom, and other places.           -Warm white light   Warm white light, also called neutral light, has a color temperature between 3300 K and 5300 K. Due to its soft light, neutral color gives people a pleasant and peaceful feeling. It is suitable for the living room, dining room, kitchen, and other places.           -Cool white light   Cold white light is also called daylight color, its color temperature is above 5300K, the light source is close to natural light, it has a bright feeling and makes people concentrate. It is also suitable for a study room, kitchen, and other places.       3. Color rendering (CRI):   The extent of the light source on the object color presentation is called color rendering, refers to the light source on the object's true color reproduction, expressed in English CRI, unit is Ra.   • How to Choose Between E26 and E27 Bulbs?
    There are some facts you should consider when choosing between E26 and E27 bulbs. Bulb type and size  Both E26 and E27 bulbs come in various designs and sizes. Since these specify the bulb base and not the bulb, you will have a range of options. They can be A19, A15, A21, G25, G30, BR30, PAR 20, and so on. Often, however, an A19 bulb and an E26 bulb are considered the same thing, but they are not. Typically, most A19 bulbs come with an E26 base, which can be confusing. However, it is possible to use an A27 bulb with an E19 head. However, when deciding on the size of the bulb, consider the size of the space and the purpose of the lighting. If you are lighting a crowded area, such as a small staircase or narrow corridor, choose a small E26/E27 bulb. Adding bulky fixtures in these areas can look awkward.  Consider the voltage rating  To choose E26 and E27 bulbs, you first need to check for voltage compatibility. To do this, use the standard voltage for your area or the voltage rating of the power supply. Keep in mind that E26 bulbs can operate at 110V-120V, while E27 bulbs can operate at 220V-240V. Therefore, please match the voltage rating and select the bulb that suits your requirements.   Location Have you ever thought about having to consider your geographical location when choosing a luminaire? It is interesting but true when choosing between E26 and E27 bulbs. Since they run on different voltages, you need to consider the standard voltage in your country. If you are in a country that uses 110V-120V, such as the United States, choose an E26 bulb. If you live in any European country, you must choose an E27 bulb. In contrast, a low color temperature gives off a yellow hue, creating a relaxing atmosphere. So if you're looking for E26/E27 bulbs for your bedroom, choose low-color temperature bulbs. Dimmability Light bulbs have a dimmable feature that allows you to adjust the light intensity and set it to your preferred comfort level. However, not all bulbs are dimmable. Therefore, if you want better control over your lighting, choose dimmable bulbs with E26 or E27 bulbs. As a result, you can increase the intensity of the light while working in the room and dim the light while reading or relaxing.   • E26 Vs E27 Bulbs – Interchangeable? Not Necessarily!
    What are E26 and E27 bulbs? E26 and E27 bulbs denote the size of the bulb base. Here, the term “E” stands for “Edison screw” and the numbers “26” and “27” define the diameter of the bulb base. The numbers “26” and “27” define the diameter of the bulb's base. The diameter of the base of an E26 bulb is 26 millimeters and the diameter of the base of an E27 bulb is 27 millimeters. While this 1 mm difference may seem negligible when physical properties are taken into account, when examined in depth, there are many differences in application.   1. Specifications and mechanical differences  The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) has set specific standards for E26 and E27 bulbs. According to this standard, the minimum diameter of both E26 and E27 bulbs should be 26.05 m. However, the maximum diameter of E26 bulbs can be up to 26.41 mm, while the maximum diameter of E27 bulbs can be up to 26.45 mm. So you can see that the difference in diameter is negotiable. This means that mechanically you can interchange the two bulbs. You can easily install an E27 bulb into an E26 socket and it is very easy to do so. With screw length, it defines the distance from the head of the screw to the electrically charged contact point or the bottom of the bulb. The minimum screw length for E26 bulbs is 19.56 mm, while the minimum screw length for E27 bulbs is 22.0 mm. The reason for this huge difference is that they are rated for different voltages; I'll get to that in the next section.    Moving on to the height of the insulator cap, you'll notice a difference of 1.75 mm. The insulator cap in the E26 bulb is 3.25 mm, while the same cap in the E27 bulb is 5 mm high. Finally, the minimum width of the charged contact pad for the E26 bulb is 9.14 mm and extends up to a maximum of 11.56 mm, but in the E27 bulb, the minimum height of the contact pad can be 4.8 mm, with a maximum limit of 11.5 mm.    2. Voltage and Compatibility The E26 bulb is designed to be rated at 120 V. Meanwhile, the E27 bulb is compatible with 240 V. Therefore, you can see that the E27 bulb operates at a lower voltage compared to the E26 bulb. While you can install an E26 bulb into an E27 socket, it is not safe. Replacing the bulb can lead to a fire and cause the bulb to be overpowered.   • Sun Yat-sen University team and its collaborators make new advances in LEDs
      Recently, the team of Prof. Liu Chuan and Associate Prof. Liu Baiquan from the School of Electronics and Information Engineering (School of Microelectronics) of Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU) has made important progress in the field of light-emitting diodes (LEDs). They accurately regulated exciton dynamics through the core/shell colloidal quantum well technology, which effectively reduced exciton composite defects, balanced charge injection, and suppressed the energy transfer between colloidal quantum wells. This innovative approach not only significantly improves the efficiency of LED devices, but also successfully integrates them with thin-film transistors and circuit boards to achieve active addressing, i.e., “pipeline” effect display.     As a new type of nanocrystalline LEDs, colloidal quantum well LEDs have potential applications in the field of displays due to their high color purity, narrow half-height width electroluminescence performance, and solution processability. The team reveals the strong dependence between exciton generation and the thickness of the colloidal quantum well shell by deeply probing the effect of core/shell heterogeneous colloidal quantum wells with different shell thicknesses on exciton dynamics.     It is found that increasing the shell layer thickness within a certain thickness range can significantly increase the radiative compounding efficiency and reduce the Russo-cheese compounding, which substantially improves the overall performance of colloidal quantum well-LED devices. This in turn realizes high performance with high efficiency, high brightness and ultra-low efficiency roll-off. Its external quantum efficiency is as high as 13.43%, its current efficiency reaches 9.20 cd/A, and its power efficiency is 6.04 lm/W.     These metrics are the highest reported so far in the red light band (600-700 nm) of 2D nanocrystalline LEDs. In addition, the device shows only a slight decrease in external quantum efficiency from 13.15% to 12% during the brightness enhancement from 1000 cd/m2 to 10000 cd/m2, the best performance among the colloidal quantum well LEDs reported so far.     By combining with a PEN flexible substrate, a flexible colloidal quantum well LED is further realized with an outer quantum efficiency that is 40 times higher than the best previously reported flexible colloidal quantum well LED. The research team further utilized the high-current TFT driver circuit to successfully realize the selective pass control of single or multiple colloidal quantum well LEDs and realized the active addressing, i.e., the “pipelined” effect display. This achievement not only opens up a new way for further research and application of colloidal quantum well LEDs but also provides new ideas and strategies for the development of future display and lighting technologies.           The research results have been published in the internationally recognized academic journal Applied Physics Reviews, with the title of “Exciton control enables high-performance colloidal quantum well light-emitting diodes” and selected as a Featured Article. emitting diodes”, and was selected as a Featured Article.     The first unit of the paper is the School of Electronic and Information Engineering (School of Microelectronics) of Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU).
